** FREE PET HEALTH CHECK WITH A NURSE **
We are pleased to offer 'MOT' pet health checks free of charge with a registered
veterinary nurse.
The nurse will chat to you about your pet's general health and examine your pet
looking for any subtle changes that may affect your pet's welbeing or indicate early disease.
The health checks are suited to all of our pets, no matter what their age. We would particularly
recommend them as juvenile health checks at about 6-8 months of age, for middle aged pets
as weight gain and dental disease can start to cause a problem, and for geriatric patients
who would benefit from 6 monthly check ups to detect any disease early
THE HEALTH CHECK INCLUDES:
- WEIGHT CHECK: Over 30% of dogs and 10% of cats in the UK are overweight. Your
pet need only be 15% over their ideal weight to be classed as clinically obese.
Obese animals suffer an increased risk of developing heart disease, diabetes and
joint disease. Additionally overweight animals are a higher risk for anaesthetics
and sedation. Ultimately carrying excess weight leads to a shortened life expectancy.
- DENTAL CHECK: Cats and dogs commonly suffer from dental problems. Their teeth
are constantly under attack from the bacteria responsible for periodontal disease.
In some cases, these bacteria may even enter the bloodstream and lead to heart,
kidney and liver disease. 70% of dogs over 3 years of age suffer from dental
problems. Such statistics should alert us to the importance of good oral hygiene
in dogs. Brushing is the most effective form of dental care in fighting against
periodontal disease. It may be supplemented by food specially formulated to promote
oral hygiene.
- HEART RATE: Your dog's heart rate should be between 80-150 beats per minute.
Your cat's heart rate should be 100-160 beats per minute. A high heart rate may
be nothing to worry about, stress can elevate heart rate. However a high or
low heart rate may indicate a problem with the heart and should be checked by a vet.
